The Legend of the Moorish Heads: Between Love, Passion, and Authentic Caltagirone Ceramics
The Moorish Heads are refined ceramic vases depicting the faces of a man and a woman, iconic symbols of Sicilian craftsmanship and identity. The male figure is distinguished by dark mustaches and thick, proud eyebrows; the female face, on the other hand, enchants with soft features and full, sensuous lips. Both effigies are adorned with lavish details: finely crafted jewelry, majestic crowns, or, alternatively, elegant turbans that evoke ancient Eastern origins.
But what is the true story behind these masterpieces?
The Legend of the Moorish Heads: A Tale of Love, Jealousy, and Revenge
Behind the monumental beauty of these vases lies a compelling narrative of passion, secrets, and betrayal dating back to the Arab domination in Sicily.
Love Born in the Heart of Kalsa
The legend unfolds around the year 1000, in the picturesque Kalsa district in Palermo. It tells of a young Moorish soldier who, while strolling through the city streets, saw a beautiful maiden on a balcony tending to her lush plants. Captivated by such beauty, the young man immediately decided to declare his love for her.
The girl, struck by the fierce charm and Arab features of the soldier, immediately reciprocated his feelings. An intense and overwhelming love story blossomed between the two, lived with ardor and deep devotion.
The Tragic Secret and the Birth of the Myth
The young soldier, however, harbored an unspeakable secret: a wife and children awaited him in his homeland. When the painful truth was revealed on their last night together before his imminent departure, the girl's heart broke. That immense feeling of love instantly turned into blind, vengeful rage.
During the night, gripped by the delirium of betrayal, the girl decapitated the young Moor in his sleep. To keep him with her forever, she turned his head into a vase, planted basil seeds in it, and displayed it on her balcony. Watered by the young woman's bitter tears, the basil grew so lush that it aroused the envy of the neighbors, who began commissioning local master artisans to create terracotta vases that reproduced the features of the Moorish Head.
