The Legend of the Moorish Heads: A Story of Passion and Jealousy

Behind the beauty of these ornamental vases lies one of the most fascinating and poignant stories of Sicilian tradition, set in Palermo around the year 1000, in the heart of the historic Kalsa district.

It is said that a beautiful Sicilian maiden spent her days on her balcony, lovingly tending to her plants. One day, a young Moor passing by saw her and, struck by her beauty, declared his love, which was reciprocated. The idyll, however, broke when the girl discovered that her beloved would soon leave her to return to the East, where his wife and children awaited him.

Wounded in pride and blinded by jealousy, the young woman waited until night and, while the man slept, killed him and cut off his head. She made a vase out of it, in which she planted basil, the king's plant, and displayed it on her balcony. Watered by the maiden's tears, the basil grew so lush that it aroused the envy of the neighbors who, not to be outdone, began to make terracotta vases in the likeness of a Moorish Head.

Today, giving or displaying a pair of Moorish Heads is a symbol of love, passion, and prosperity.
